Busulfan

Clinical Summary

Busulfan is the most widely used chemotherapeutic agent in high-dose conditioning regimens that prepare patients for allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). HSCTs are now routinely used to treat patients with cancers and other disorders of the blood and immune systems. The ability to deliver the appropriate dose and maintain the target blood level throughout the treatment regimen is a key contributing factor in determining the overall success of transplant. Veno-occlusive disease (VOD), a primary and serious side effect of busulfan treatment, can be minimized with careful dose management. While many HSCT patients currently have their blood levels monitored, in many instances technologies available today do not provide results in a timely enough manner to be clinically relevant. High quality, timely results can be made available with a fast, automated and reliable assay for busulfan.
